I was once told by a distant friend that in order to survive in Singapore is to have lots of money. He went on to say that he is constantly busy with work and could not afford to spend time with his companions. Generating money and lots of it is of paramount importance to him and his logic was that he could revel in what he’d sown in the near future.
Can money give you happiness? If you mirror the sensibilities spewed by the Chief Justice recently, you will find that it is quite appalling as well. Pay lawyers more and they will stick to their jobs. Have we forgotten about honesty and integrity? Or does the sheepish populace do care only about money and the hereafter? Sometimes I do wonder if there is any honorable lawyers left in this city state. Those I knew abandoned ship long ago and setup their own law employment agencies in London. The reasons are quite obvious if you would reflect on the recent event where citizens exercising their constitutional rights were summarily bankrupted. Or the fact no local lawyer would dare represent FEER against the defamation suit by father and son Lee. As far I know, there are no courts in the land against the mercurial duo. It is akin to taking the battle against a towering mountain. The judge will have your defense thrown out of the window within two shakes of a duck’s backside.
It is therefore not possible.
On the subject of possibilities let us examine briefly this magical word: Is it possible for citizens to exercise their political rights? Is it possible to have a peaceful assembly to demonstrate your concern to policies and laws? Would it be possible to speak without fear of repercussion or retaliation? Alas you even cannot have a peaceful jog along with others if the number of you are gay or under the auspices of a homosexual event. I am also sure you would have your very own grievances to air as well concerning possibilities. Each time we see those NDP banners these propagandic words are not left etched in our minds but quickly consumed and destroyed.
I do not share the sentiments of that friend who is too preoccupied making money. I find his logic and reasoning very disconcerting.
One does not live by bread alone. If we believe in solely wealth in the city of immobilities, we will self-destruct inevitably. Pray we do not steer into this direction while in the pursuit for relentless prosperity.
