According to Amnesty International’s figures, there are at least 34 men in detention without charge or trial under the Internal Security Act. The latest person detained was Abdul Basheer, the man who was implicated as a self-radicalized terror acolyte though he had not yet committed anything wrong yet. The authorities claimed, since there was no apparent transparency to these cases, that these men were involved in militant Islamic groups and therefore a threat to us.
If you would contrast this to the notorious prison facility in Guantanamo Bay, it has very similar attributes. No charge or trial and no transparency. The point here is not about terrorism. It is about human rights. Article 5/9/10 of Universal Declaration of Human Rights point out the human rights scandals of Guantanamo and other detention facilities worldwide:![]()
5. No one shall be subjected to torture or to cruel, inhuman or degrading treatment or punishment.
10. Everyone is entitled in full equality to a fair and public hearing by an independent and impartial tribunal, in the determination of his rights and obligations and of any criminal charge against him.
Are we taking the road to Gitmo? What if we are truly innocent and wrongfully detained?
Below is a full-length feature film by Michael Winterbottom about three British detainees in Guantanamo Bay. Winner of the Silver Bear at the Berlin International Film Festival, it is a terrifying true story which has garnered critical reviews and controversy.
So grab that popcorn and beer, kick back and enjoy the movie. After which, please do spread the message far and wide about our human rights. You may be somebody’s savior. It is time to be empathetic.
